Tech and sports are officially merging into the future. Apple TV has announced that the May 23rd Major League Soccer match between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC will be the first-ever professional sporting event broadcasted 100% live using only iPhone 17 Pro devices.
The production team is scattering smartphones all over the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. This setup allows them to capture both traditional camera angles and exclusive, never-before-seen perspectives using the advanced Apple Log 2 video format.
This historic broadcast marks a massive shift in live streaming technology:
- The Match: LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC.
- When to Watch: Saturday, May 23rd at 7:30 PM PT (just before the 2026 FIFA World Cup break).
- The Tech Setup: Smartphones will cover everything from player warm-ups to inside-the-net goal views.
- The Hardware: Apple is leveraging three 48MP Fusion cameras on each device to replicate eight standard broadcast lenses.
- Global Access: MLS Season Pass subscribers in over 100 countries can stream the game with zero regional restrictions.
This is not Apple’s first experiment with mobile broadcasting. In September 2025, they tested the waters during a Friday Night Baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. The technical test was such a success that one of the iPhones used was actually inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. After more testing during the 2025 MLS Cup, Apple is now ready to go fully mobile.
If this weekend's broadcast succeeds, it will completely disrupt the sports media industry, paving the way for more flexible, immersive, and high-tech coverage using everyday consumer hardware.
